Very good book.
This is an unsettling story of a retired colonel who has been waiting fifteen years for a pension. Each Friday he goes to the postmaster, expecting a letter confirming his pension status, and every week he is disappointed. The postmaster says, "no one writes to the colonel". But still he hopes, and each week expects that the coveted letter will arrive. He lives with his severely asthmatic wife, who is often confined to bed. Altogether a grim picture is painted of an elderly couple living in poverty, but not without hope despite the cruel realities of a corrupt government. The colonel's one asset is a rooster, which belonged to his son, who has been assassinated. It is a fighting cock, with a life as abject as the colonel's, being tied to various bits of furniture and fed only corn, or failing that some old seed. The colonel tries to pawn his clock, a picture, or the rooster, the only assets he has left, but his pride does not allow him to show how desperate he is. One is eventually told that he only fought for the insurgents for a few months when he was twenty years old, so one is left to wonder what he has done in the intervening years. There is a pervading atmosphere of menace. The colonel does not like October and does not expect to survive. I did not understand this reference. Although nothing is stated explicitly one gets the feeling that the colonel is disappointed that the cause he fought for has not realised his hopes. And yet he remains optimistic. The callousness of the attitude toward the rooster, who is kidnapped for a trial fight, is disconcerting, yet this rooster is another symbol of hope. Perhaps he will win in January and the colonel will have enough money to survive, should they last that long.
