The object of this book is to present the more important experimental results and theories relating to the rates with which chemical reactions occur. Since the appearance of the second edition of this book in 1965, there have been many significant devel- opments in both experimental and theoretical chemical kinetics. The subject is now so vast it is impossible to make any attempt at comprehensiveness. Instead, the present book attempts to describe the basic concepts as clearly as possible and confines its attention to those features of kinetics that seem to be most important for those who require a general knowledge of the subject. Those embarking on research in kinetics may find the book a useful initial guide but will need to read more detailed accounts of special aspects of the subject. At the end of each chapter there is a selected bibli- ography of some of the books and articles which I myself have found to be particularly helpful.
