And honestly, it did not just live up to my expectations but also exceed them. "The big brother is watching" This novel is set in a dystopian future where the world is turned into three super-states. Oceania, Eurasia and Eastasia. And there is a totalitarian rule across all three super-states. Winston smith is the main protagonist of the book. He lives in Oceania. It is ruled by the party. Almost everywhere there are telescreens and mics which are used to watch people. Society has been divided into three castes. The inner party, the outer party, and lastly the proles. The party controls everything, from what to produce to what to think. They have introduced a new language named "newspeak" which has reduced the words in English, which is known as "Oldspeak". There is nothing that goes unnoticed by the party. The big brother has eyes everywhere. The party controls the past, present, and future. Winston is an outer party member, who works in the Ministry of Truth. Where he rewrites history according to the party and its needs. Winston thinks of destroying the party and wants to live the golden past. But there is no golden past according to the party. One day he meets a person named Obrien, whom he thinks is a member of the brotherhood! He also meets Julia who was in love with him. Love was seen as a crime at the party. But to Winston, it was a revolution! “Until they become conscious they will never rebel, and until after they have rebelled they cannot become conscious.” The book tells a story that is no longer in a dystopia. Many aspects of this book can be seen even in today's modern society, especially with the government. This book isn't just normal fiction no it's far more than that. This book says a lot about society and how we are caged inside the manipulative world. This book talks about so many aspects of life such as Human behavior, Freedom, the caste system, Manipulation, hope, love, hatred, how rulers can suppress the thought of people, Betrayal, and many more. “But if thought corrupts language, language can also corrupt thought.” It is amazing how a limited usage of language can control people's thoughts. How falsification of history can alter human lives. How power can make people do atrocities. In honesty, to fully comprehend this book one must read it multiple times. I have a firm belief that if I reread this again in a year or two, I will understand more. The book can change your perspective on society. It will make you question the things that are happening right now. “We shall meet in the place where there is no darkness.” The book felt magnificent to me. It also widened my overall perspective of society. The first part of the book was a slow build-up toward the wider philosophy. The second part took a turn. Made it into a love story which a lot of stories to tell, a beacon of hope in the darkness. The third part takes a dark turn, where I believe the whole book makes its premises clear. It's not an ending you would expect from books. Though I would say I was lost at the beginning of part two. The famous comic "V for Vendetta" was also inspired by this. Not to mention countless games which were inspired by Orwell's book. The historical impact of this book is truly amazing. I would suggest this book to everyone, but not everyone will grasp the basis of this book in one reading. I will be looking forward to reading this book in the future again!
